Module 13 introduces another cluster of vowel digraph spelling choices and these include ‘ow’, ‘ue’, ‘oi’ and ‘oy’. The teaching notes for every new spelling choice are clear and helpful, with detailed information on how to reinforce the phonics associated with these new spelling choices. Much of the work at this level is designed to establish an awareness of long vowel sounds and the need to make the correct spelling choice from a selection of possible vowel digraphs. Another spelling choice given in this Module is ‘e-e’ for the long vowel sound (e) at the end of words such as ‘complete’ and ‘extreme’. The high frequency irregular words ‘here’, ‘these’ and ‘were’ must be learnt as sight words because of the variation on the phonic for that spelling choice.
